Removing An Old And Broken Well Pump

Construction & Contractors Blog

If you have a well on your property that supplies your home with water, you may need to replace the submersible pump at some point. This is necessary when the pump breaks or wears down. Before you can add a new pump, you must remove the old one. Keep reading to learn about some tips to help you with the removal.

Prepare For The Removal

Before you can do anything else, you want to prepare for the removal of the well pump. You will need to clear a fairly large area around the top of the casing so you have a place to put the old pump. Well pumps are not that wide, but they are quite long and are often placed on their side after removal, so make sure you have a clear five to ten foot space around the top well casing.

Once you have a clear area, you want to shut off the power to the pump. You can usually just flip the electrical breaker attached to the device. If you are unsure where the breaker is or how to turn off the power to the unit, it may be wise to flip the main breaker until you are done with the well pump replacement.

You should also remove the well cap from the well so you have clear access to the pump. If you notice bolts on the top of the cap then use a socket to remove them. You can usually pull the cap up and away from the well at this time. If you do not see bolts then you may need to pry the cap up by using a flathead screwdriver. Simply insert the screwdriver in between the cap and the well casing and twist the tool until the cap loosens.

Remove The Adapter And Pump

Once you open the well and look into it, you will notice that there is an adapter on the top of the outlet pipe; this will need to be removed before you can pull the pump up and out of the pit. Oftentimes, you will need a special tool to release this part. This is called a t-handled pitless adapter tool. The tool connects to the adapter end so it can then be twisted off.

At this time, the lower discharge pipe will be free, and this part attaches directly to the well pump. You can lift the pump up and out of the well by pulling up on the pipe. This will require two people -- one person should stabilize and hold the discharge pipe while the other person elevates the pump.
